Anthem - Ayn Rand Essay Example for Free
Anthem Ayn Rand Essay In the book Anthem, Equality 7-2521 (Equality) lived in a society where everyone was equal and treated with disrespect. The society had no tolerance for being different and having their own opinion and ideas. People couldnââ¬â¢t even pursue the career they dreamed of having. They were punished for disobeying any of these ââ¬Å"rulesâ⬠. Despite Equalityââ¬â¢s strict society, his motivations in conducting his experiments are finding individuality, starting a new revolution, finding freedom, and trying to become a scholar. Equalityââ¬â¢s inspiration, will, and determination lead him to spark a new revolution. After Equality found the black hole, he kept habitually going back to it, to discover new things and gain intelligence. He was finding more about himself and discovering that everyone was not the same and not everyone has the same talents in life. Even though it was against the governmentââ¬â¢s expectations about everyone being equal, Equality was happy to break the law, so he could learn more. Equality says, ââ¬Å"And yet there is no shame in us and no regret. We say to ourselves that we are a wretch and a traitor. But we feel no burden upon our spirit and no burden upon our spirit and no fear in our heart.â⬠(Rand 37) Equality was curious. He wanted to find out about the unknown. By showing his invention, he would spark a new revolution of light. He would inspire people to create and learn. True joy comes from what a man can do with inspiration, desire, will, to better people, and while doing that Equality learns that it will allow him to achieve more in society. Equality wanted to accomplish something by himself and prove that not everyone meets the expectations of their job. In other words thatââ¬â¢s saying that just because you come from a poor family, doesnââ¬â¢t mean youââ¬â¢re going to be poor when you become an adult. Anyone can achieve what they set their mind to, and Equality made up his mind, he wanted to be different and he wasnââ¬â¢t going to give up. When Equality discovered his invention he wanted to prove the scholars wrong and to prove to them that not everything had been discovered. Equality says, ââ¬Å"The Council of Scholars has said that we all know the things which exist and therefore the things which are not known by all do not exist. But we think that the Council of Scholars is blind. The secrets of this earth are not for all men to see, but only for those who will seek them. We know, for we have found a secret unknown to all ourà brothers.â⬠(Rand, 52) He just wanted to prove that he was smart enough to be a scholar. His invention proved that anyone can do great things and his brotherââ¬â¢s look up to him. Equality only knows what he is capable of not ââ¬Å"weâ⬠. Throughout the process of his invention, going to the Palace of Corrective Detention, going before the Council of Scholars, and running away, Equality has found his individuality. After he ran away, and found his new house, he came across the word ââ¬Å"Iâ⬠in the manuscripts, and he has started a new way of living. Equality says, ââ¬Å"Then I called the Golden One, and I told her what I had read and what I learned. She looked at me and the first words she spoke were: ââ¬Å"I love you.â⬠â⬠(Rand, 98) Equality is determined, strong, motivated, and wonââ¬â¢t let anyone bring him down. ââ¬Å"Then, tonight, we knew that we must escape. For tomorrow the World Council of Scholars is to meet in our city.â⬠(Rand, 66), sayââ¬â¢s Equality. Equality has realized how different he is than others. He is smarter than the Council and the Scholars. He knows now he can teach others about electricity. He can help people find individuality and help them find out how theyââ¬â¢re unique. Joy comes from his heart because he has never done anything on his own and now he can achieve more expectations that just any street sweeper. Throughout the book, Equality goes against the government because he is searching for freedom. In the book, Equality talks about wanting to see himself but that is against the law, when he runs away, he finally seems himself. Equality wants to see his own image because, his entire life he has never seen it, and he has only seen the faces of his brothers. Equality sees his own face for the first time and says, ââ¬Å"We sat still and we held our breath. For our face and our body were beautiful. Our face was not like the faces of our brothers, for we felt no pity when looking upon it. Our body was not like the bodies of our brothers, for our limbs were straight and thin and hard and strong. And we thought that we could trust this being who looked upon us from the stream, and that we had nothing to fear with this being.â⬠(Rand, 80) Now that he is thinking for himself he wants to know more about himself. He never received the chance to find out what kind of person he was when he was young, so now that he is older he wants to know more about himself. He falls in love with Liberty the first time he sees her, and in their society theyââ¬â¢re not supposed to take notice of the opposite gender.à Equality whispers, ââ¬Å"For men are forbidden to take notice of women, and women are forbidden to take notice of men. But we think of one among women, they whose name is Liberty, and we think of no others.â⬠(Rand, 38) When Equality and Liberty both run away they can finally be together, and start their family. Equality wanted Liberty, so he found a way, and got her. When Equality finally finds freedom, on the first day in the forest, he says, ââ¬Å"We awake when a ray of sunlight fell across our face. We wanted to leap to our feet, as we have had to leap every morning of our life, but we remembered suddenly that no bell had rung and that there was no bell to ring anywhere. We lay on our back, we threw our arms out, and we looked up at the sky. The leaves had edges of silver that trembled and rippled like a river of green and fire flowing high above us.â⬠(Rand, 78) Equality was free. In conclusion, Equalityââ¬â¢s self-determination and perseverance allowed him to conduct his experiments without anyone telling him otherwise. Even though he had tough obstacles to climb over to have his invention, he didnââ¬â¢t let anything stop him. The Council of Scholars was his biggest challenge with his experiment and he overcame them. The biggest part of Equality conducting experiments was finding individuality within himself. He knew that people should not be treated the exact same and everyone had a mind of their own. Equalityââ¬â¢s self-respect and determination paved the way to a life of his own.
Teaching English With Pictures
Teaching English With Pictures TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY USING PICTURES TO THE SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS (A Pre-Experimental Research to the Sixth Grade Students) ABSTRACT Vocabulary is an important component in teaching English and in teaching vocabulary, teacher needs to use technique or media in order to help students to have good understanding on new words being learned. The teacher can use media, such as pictures because pictures can be used to help students become familiar with new vocabulary in an enjoyable way and pictures can motivate the students in learning vocabulary. The main objective of this study is to find out whether or not pictures can improve the students in vocabulary mastery. The research method used is experiment method or more specifically the pre-experimental design with one group pretest and posttest design. The sample is one class consisting of 39 students. Based on the data analysis, the result shows that the tobs was higher than t-table (13.197 > 1.686), so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that there was significant difference between the mean of students pretest score and the mean of posttest score. It indicates that teaching English vocabulary using pictures was effective in improving the students vocabulary mastery. Introduction English has become more important language in the world. This is because people need a universal language to communicate with other people from other countries. People who are able to speak or communicate in English will be easy to get more knowledge or informations. According to Mc Arthur (1992:571 in Kaswan 2010:8), language refers to ââ¬Å"a human system of communication which uses structured vocal sounds and can be embodied in other media such as writing, print and physical signs.â⬠In addition, language is a systematic means of comunicating ideas or feelings by the use of conventionalized signs, sounds, gestures, or marks having understood meanings (Websterââ¬â¢s 1961:1270 in Brown 1980:5). In order to make a good communication in English, we must have a good foundation in vocabulary and grammar. because they interact with each other to convey an idea. English as a foreign language is taught at the early age. In Indonesia English has been introduced in kindergarten and elementary school. While in junior high school and senior high school, it is a compulsory subject. Thornbury (2002:13) states that without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed. It means if we spend most of our time studying grammar, we can say very little with grammar. But if we learn more words and expressions, we can say almost anything with words. According to Linse and Nunan (2005:121) vocabulary is the collection of words that an individual knows. Meanwhile, Hiebert and Kamil (2005:3) states ââ¬Å"vocabulary is the knowledge of meanings of words. Learning vocabulary is important as a part of learning English or other foreign languages since learners learn vocabulary first before they master more complex structureâ⬠. Vocabulary is one of the most important element in the language, without vocabulary we cannot communicative effectively, according to Allen and Valette (1977: 149) ââ¬Å"Vocabulary is an important factor in all language teaching. Students must continually be learning words as they learn structures and as they practice the sound system.â⬠It also means that teaching in speaking, writing, reading, and listening cannot be separated from teaching vocabulary. In teaching vocabulary, teachers needs to used technique in order to help students have good understanding on new words being learned. In line with this Nation (1990:51) in Cameron (2001:85) lists some basic techniques by which teachers can explain the meanings of new words, all of which can be used in the young learners classroom. They are by using demonstration or pictures (using object, a cut-out figure, gesture, performing an action, photographs, drawings or diagrams on the board, and pictures from books). Based on Allen (1983:12) there are three ways to show the meanings of vocabulary words: Pictures Explanations in the students own language. Definitions in simple English, using vocabulary that the students already know. Furthermore, Cameron (2001: 84) states ââ¬Å"Vocabulary needs to be met. In different activities, with new knowledge and new connections developed each time the same words are met again. Nation (1990) in Cameron (2001: 84) suggests that a new word needs to be met at least five or six times in a text book unit before it has any chance of being learn. Teaching English vocabulary using pictures is a kind of technique for students in memorizing their vocabularies easily and fast. Pictures can be used as media in teaching and learning process, especially in teaching English vocabulary. According to Allen (1983:24) ââ¬Å"Picture helping students understand the meaning of a wordâ⬠. Pictures which have been cut out of magazines and newspapers are also useful. The use of picture in teaching vocabulary is a fun activity bacause pictures can motivate for the students to learn vocabulary. Based on Thornbury (2002:80) the use of pictures or objects for teaching vocabulary can be used to present new vocabulary items, but they can be used to practice them. It also means they can explore their abilities to increase their vocabularies. Pictures can make the material is easy to understand and to help the students memorize the word easily especially by the children. The used of pictures also simple and easy to use, can makes learning more fun and the students are not bored in learning. Regarding this, Wright (1989:136) adds ââ¬Å"Pictures can be motivated the students, made the subjects they are dealing with clear, and illustrated the general idea, and forms an object or actionâ⬠. It means pictures are important to help motivated the students in learning English vocabulary and memorizing the meanings. Research Question and Hypothesis There are research question and hypothesis of the research: Research Question Teaching English vocabulary to the students will not be an easy work to do. This study seek the problem that are formulated in the following question: ââ¬Å"Is pictures effective to improve studentsââ¬â¢ vocabulary mastery?â⬠. Hypothesis In this research, the writer has formulated the hypothesis as follow: ââ¬Å"Teaching English vocabulary using pictures can improve the studentsââ¬â¢ vocabulary masteryâ⬠. Objectives of the Research The study discussed the way of the teacher taught English vocabulary to the students. The writer has formulated an objective as follows: ââ¬Å"To find out whether or not pictures can improve the studentsââ¬â¢ vocabulary mastery.â⬠Research Methodology Research Design In this research the writer used pre-experiments with one group pretest-posttest design. According to Fraenkel. et al. ( in Kaswan and Suprijadi 2013:34) experimental research refers to research in which at least one independent variable is manipulated, other relevant variable are controlled, and the effect on one or more dependent variables is observed. The method used in this research was pre-experimental studies. Pre-experimental is a research procedure that has no control group. The observation that is done before the experiment is called pre-test and observation after the experiment is called post-test. The form of pre-experimental study that the researcher applies can be seen below (Ary et al, 2010:303). Figure 1 Pre-experimental Design Notes: 1. Apply Y1 is pre-test that is given before the teaching or the treatment. 2. Apply X, is considered as treatment given. 3. Apply Y2 is post-test that is given after having treatment. 2. Research Method In the research the writer used quantitative method. According to Kaswan and Suprijadi (2013: 13) ââ¬Å"Quantitative research is a deductive theory-based research process that focuses primarily on testing theories and specific research hypotheses that consider finding differences and relationship using numeric data and statistical methods to make specific conclusions about phenomenaâ⬠. Population and Sample Population According to Singh (2007: 88) population is a group of individuals, objects, or items from among which samples are taken for measurement. So, population is a complete set of all those things, people, numbers societies, or other that can be used in taking data sources in the research. In this case the population of the research was the sixth grade students of MI Cireundeu in academic year 2014/2015. There were 39 students as the population. Sample The writer chose the entire population as the sample. According to Webster (in Singh 2007: 88) a sample can be defined as a finite part of a statistical population whose properties are used to make estimates about population as a whole. It can be defined a set of target respondents selected from a larger population for the purpose of a survey. In addition, Tavakoli (2012: 471) defines, a sample is the smaller group which is a portion of a population. In collecting the data, the writer used pretest and posttest. The pretest was administered to know the studentsââ¬â¢ vocabulary before given the treatment. The posttest was given at the end of program to find out the difference of students achievement in vocabulary mastery after the treatment using pictures was given. To collect the data, the writer decided an achievement test that has been developed based on the material. The writer used a test that consisted of fill-in-the-blank and arrange the jumbled letters. The test consisted of 10 items and time provided to do the test was 30 minutes. Result and Discussion The Result In this research the writer used one group to collect the data. The writer gave pretest to the students to identify the studentsââ¬â¢ ability in vocabulary mastery, before giving the posttest, the writer gave treatment to the students. During the treatment, the writer taught about vocabulary using pictures. Then, the writer gave a posttest to the students to find out the studentsââ¬â¢ ability after getting treatment. The result of pretest and posttest can be seen below. Table 1 The result of pretest and posttest No Pretest Posttest D 1 70 90 20 400 2 60 70 10 100 3 65 70 5 25 4 80 100 20 400 5 80 100 20 400 6 85 100 15 225 7 70 80 10 100 8 80 100 20 400 9 75 85 10 100 10 65 80 15 225 11 60 65 5 25 12 70 85 15 225 13 60 65 5 25 14 60 80 20 400 15 65 70 5 25 16 50 65 15 225 17 60 75 15 225 18 75 85 10 100 19 50 65 15 225 20 75 80 5 25 21 65 75 10 100 22 75 100 25 625 23 70 85 15 225 24 70 80 10 100 25 70 85 15 225 26 45 60 15 225 27 70 80 10 100 28 60 70 10 100 29 60 70 10 100 30 75 75 0 0 31 70 80 10 100 32 55 60 5 25 33 80 95 15 225 34 75 85 10 100 35 65 70 5 25 36 75 85 10 100 37 65 70 5 25 38 65 80 15 225 39 40 60 20 400 SUM 2605 3075 470 6900 MEAN ( 66,4 78,4 Result of the Research by Using SPSS 17 To find out whether the data normal or not, the writer used SPSS program. This program was used for testing the assumption of normality of the data. The result of normality test can be seen below. Table 2 Tests of Normality Kolmogorov-Smirnova Shapiro-Wilk Statistic df Sig. Statistic Df Sig. Pretest .138 39 .058 .951 39 .087 Posttest .132 39 .087 .935 39 .026 Based on the table above, the data was normal. It can be seen on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov column to know whether the data was normal or not. The significance of pretest was .058 and the significance of posttest was .087. It means the data was normal because the significance result of pretest and posttest were higher than .005. After the writer found that the data was normal, the writer continued with calculating the t-test. This test was used to determine whether or not there was a significant difference between teaching vocabularies using pictures to elementary school students before and after treatment. It can be seen as follow: Table 3 Paired Samples Statistics Mean N Std. Deviation Std. Error Mean Pair 1 pretest 66.7949 39 10.03200 1.60641 posttest 78.8462 39 11.83558 1.89521 According to Kaswan and Suprijadi (2013:189) ââ¬Å"standard deviation is the most widely used measure of variability of a set of data in inferential statistical proceduresâ⬠. Based on the table above, Standard deviation of pretest was 10,03 and standard deviation of posttest was 11,83. Table 4 Paired Samples Test Paired Differences T Df Sig. (2-tailed) Mean Std. Deviation Std. Error Mean 95% Confidence Interval of the Difference Lower Upper Pair 1 pretest ââ¬â posttest -12.05128 5.70295 .91320 -13.89996 -10.20260 -13.197 38 .000 After the writer calculated the data by using SPSS program, from the result of statistic calculation the data above, t observed is 13.197 the level significance = 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) = 38. So t-table with the level significance = 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) = 38, the writer found the t-table was 1.686. Because tobs was 13.197 and t-table was 1.686. It means that, tobs was higher than t-table 13.197 > 1.686. The writer conclude that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. . It means that there is a significant improvement of students vocabulary mastery after giving treatment of pictures. In other words, teaching English using pictures to the sixth grade students of MI Cireundeu was efective to improve the studentsââ¬â¢ vocabulary mastery . Discussion In this research, the writer applied the significance of 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = N-1 (39 ââ¬â 1 = 38) 1.686. As the result, t-test (13.197) was bigger than t-table (1.686). The writer concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. Based on the research findings, it indicated that the achievements of the students were influenced significantly by the process of teaching and learning using pictures technique in teaching vocabulary, which had a positive effect to the students achievement. The previous studies of the research by using pictures can help the students to recognize the English vocabulary. Elsy (2013) in her research explained that the used of pictures can increase studentsââ¬â¢ vocabulary mastery. The second research conducted by Sholihah (2009). According to her research the positive effects of using pictures in teaching English vocabulary, were: pictures could improve the studentsââ¬â¢ motivation, pictures could attract the students attention, pictures help the students to memorize the vocabulary, and pictures make the teaching and learning activities interesting. Conclusions and Suggestions Conclusions Based on the research findings and discussions, the writer can conclude them as follow: The mean scores of pretest who were not taught with pictures as a media was 66,4 and the mean students scores of posttest was 78,4. The standard deviation of the pretest was 10,03 and standard deviation of posttest was 11,83. In order to know whether the difference between the two means was significant or not, t-test was applied. The result of computation was 13.197. So t-table with the level significance (Ãâ°Ã¢â¬Ë) = 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) = 38, found that the t-table was 1.686. This research. showed that tobs was higher than t-table (13.197>1.686), so the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It meant that there was significant difference between the mean of studentsââ¬â¢ pretest score and the mean of posttest score. It indicated that teaching English vocabulary using pictures was effective in improving the students vocabulary mastery. Suggestions The result finding showed that teaching English vocabulary using pictures can improve the students vocabulary mastery and based on the conclusions above, some suggestions are proposed as follow: The studentsââ¬â¢ achievement in learning vocabularies by using pictures was increase than without pictures. So, it is wise for teachers to use pictures in teaching vocabularies as teaching media for the students. Teacher should select pictures which are appropriate and familiar with the studentsââ¬â¢ the pictures should be interesting. The teacher needs to provide pictures in larger size and clearly, in order to attract students attention about the materials given. In addition, the larger size and clear pictures can make the students easy to look what the teachers showing. The teacher should be able to increase the students motivation in teaching-learning English, especially in teaching vocabularies. REFERENCES Allen, D. E. Vallete, R. M. (1977). The Power of Ambition An ambition is an eager, and sometimes an inordinate, desire for preferment, honor, superiority, power, or the attainment of something. To obtain object or goal that is immensely desired. It comes from the Middle English word ââ¬Å"ambicioun,â⬠meaning and excessive desire for power, money or wealth. Ambition is something that everyone, no matter their age or cultural background, has instinctively. Ambition can be a driving force for success, or in some cases a road to failure. Through ambitious undertakings we can set goals and find ourselves and our God-given talents. We are told never to cross a bridge until we come to it, but this world is owned by men who have 'crossed bridges' in their imagination far ahead of the crowd. I was watching the Doctor Phil Show the other day, and he was talking about the five reasons for why successful people are as successful as they are. Number one on the list was a plan. A goal. A destination. An ambition. Without an ambition we have no purpose in our lives. In contrast, a goal can help us get organized and take steps towards achieving what we want in our day-to-day lives. My friend Ryan always used to tell me, and still does; ââ¬Å"My life's ambition is to be happy with my place in, and contribution to Society.â⬠That might be a nice thought, but is there really a workable goal there? No! ââ¬Å"The ambitious man is essentially a visualizer and an actualizer... He can visualize something, and when he visualizes it he sees exactly how to make it happen.â⬠- Robert L. Schwartz A person who aims at noth ing is sure to hit it. We were given a brain for a reason, and this is a perfect excuse to use it. Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. Following ones dreams and not giving a second thought to the comment of the people who put us down is what creates a successful entrepreneur. Spending time with people with a positive image and attitude can help one get motivated and realize their goals. Persistence can make everything possible, for persistence is an excellent demonstration of ambition. If one wants something to happen, one must, as a singer one put it, ââ¬Ëpick themselves up and try again.

Dr Seussââ¬â¢ Horton Hears A Who and Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories Es
Everyone is Important in Dr Seussââ¬â¢ Horton Hears A Who and Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories In many of Dr Seussââ¬â¢ childrenââ¬â¢s books, a character is struggling to get his voice heard. For example, in Horton Hears A Who and Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, there are characters that couldnââ¬â¢t get anyone to listen to what they have to say. These characters teach us that no matter how big or small, everyone is important. Horton had thought he heard a sound but didnââ¬â¢t see anyone. Nearby was a very tiny speck of dust flying aimlessly throughout the air. Horton realized that someone must be living on that speck of dust! He immediately takes action and makes up his mind that he is going to save this person because, ââ¬Å"a personââ¬â¢s a person, no matter how small.â⬠(6) No one else would believe him though. Horton knew what he had heard but didnââ¬â¢t know how to get the others to believe what he had to say. One of the most important lessons throughout the entire book is that Horton didnââ¬â¢t give up on the Whoââ¬â¢s even though everyone thought he was crazy. The little town of Whoââ¬â¢s were counting o...

Mental Health within the Criminal Justice System Essay -- Criminal Ju
This essay intends to address the role that state agencies, both within the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and more broadly the institutions of education, employment and health, play in supporting and implementing diversionary programs for offenders with mental health problems. Mental health is clearly one of the most critical issues facing the Australian and New South Wales (NSW) CJS with research indicating that offenders with mental health problems constitute the majority of those within the prison system. The current strategies for diversion will be critically evaluated in order to determine their effectiveness with regard to the delivery and production of justice, cultural sensitivity for Indigenous Australians will also be considered. The social construction of mental illness and the associated process of stigmatisation of this particular group will be explored in conjunction to explain why society still fails to prevent the mass entry of people with mental health issues into th e traditional CJS. Critical to understanding the extent of the problem is a clear definition of mentally ill, ââ¬Å"a person suffering from mental illness and, owing to that illness, there are reasonable grounds for believing that care, treatment or control of the person is necessary for the personââ¬â¢s own protection from serious harm, or for the protection of others from serious harmâ⬠[Mental Health Act 2007 (NSW)]. Noting that the statute specifies the ââ¬Ëcontrolââ¬â¢ of this group which adds to the notion that people with mental health problems are inherently more dangerous members of our society. Furthermore mental health problems within the prison system (inmate population) are estimated to be three to four times higher than in the general Australian popula... ...ââ¬ËOpportunities in public policy to support infant and early childhood mental healthââ¬â¢, American Psychologist, vol. 66, no. 2, pp. 129-139. European Airlines Essay
The European Airline industry is facing one of the most challenging environments in its history. A global economic recession coupled with the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have led to a decrease in passenger traffic, reduction in revenue per mile flown, and rising labor costs. In addition to that, disintegration in pricing power and a shift in the buying behavior of business travelers, coupled with fierce competition from low cost airlines, are forcing major airlines to restructure their operations or face the prospect of going out of business. The airline industry has responded to this difficult environment by taking measures to reduce their costs. Airlines announced layoffs of employees immediately in order to reduce the cost incurred by the airlines. To make matters worse for the industry, it has been predicted that only a gradual recovery in passenger traffic during the coming years would be seen. The European airline industry went through a deregulation process in the late 20th century. Prior to deregulation, almost one third of all passengers did not have a choice of selecting an airline. The growth in the number of passengers flying can be attributed to increased competition, innovations in marketing & operations resulting in lower cost of flying, introduction of new services and improvements in service quality. Macro-economic Analysis The industry became a perfect competition marketplace in that no single firm can influence the price of the product, consumers (for the most part) view the products of all firms as perfect substitutes and consumers will purchase a product from the firm with the lowest price. In late 1990s, during the technology bubble and the increased globalization of business, the airline industry grew at a rapid pace. However, the industry has suffered quite a few setbacks after experiencing that boom. Pummeled by poor profits and scarred from terrorist attacks against the West, the airline industry finds itself on an uncertain course. In an industry which is already taken over by tough competitions, airlines have tried to breakeven at least to survive the threat of close down. Many state administered airlines still operate based on the pacts and treaties signed by other states to decide the schedule of flights for the respective airline. The European countries, started to sign open air treaties as part of the deregulation mechanism being introduced. To get around national laws and regulatory problems, airlines have formed global alliances such as Star (United Airlines and Lufthansa), Oneworld (American Airlines, British Airways, etc. ), and SkyTeam (Delta Air Lines, Air France, and AeroMexico). Through such alliances, airlines benefit from each otherââ¬â¢s resources, which include additional routes and marketing strategies as well as code-sharing agreements, without incurring the high costs of expansion. The costs involved with increased security precautions and route changes will force the airlines to examine their agreements and consider expansions of the same. For customers, airline alliances offer broader frequent flier programs, streamlined travel, and simplified systems for purchasing tickets, but those benefits may do little to allay passenger concerns regarding safety. Advances in communication technology have also played a role in the airline industryââ¬â¢s recent troubles. Advances such as video conferencing, internet chat and internet telephones allow firms to conduct business without having their executives get on the plane and visit their customerââ¬â¢s site. Further, coast to coast business class period has become history. Businesses are currently focusing on cutting costs and reducing overheads. While the volume of passengers getting on the planes is slowly increasing, there is no significant increase in people traveling business class or first class, which is a key component in any airlineââ¬â¢s profit margins. According to a survey business travel volume in the EU fell by nearly 6% in 2008. More and more passengers continue to look at offers from airlines in form of packages and cheap fares. Nearly 80% of business travelers are stating that their company has implemented travel policies that, among other things, place restrictions on the class of air service. The results have left airlines struggling to come up with ways of attracting more premium passengers. Due to the rise in terrorist attacks and exacerbation in an existing trend of decreased demand and reduced industry revenues. The impact of the global war against terrorism was so huge on the industry that the governments had to intervene in order to support the industry to stabilize it. Although passenger volumes have shown signs of improvement, they remain low and as a result, several airlines are facing severe economic difficulties. Reacting to a drop in the number of passengers and rising costs for security, airlines have laid off staff and trimmed services in effort to keep flying.
